UCD9081: Need help determining source of reported fault

The product has an embedded processor that reads the UCD9081 STATUS register during boot.  On about 5% of units, this read occasionally returns a value with the Rail Error bit = 1.  The software then reads the RAILSTATUS register, but the read value is 0 - no rails reporting a fault.  The STATUS register can be read repeatedly after this but never will indicate an error of any sort again, and the VERSION register is read both before and after the initial STATUS read and always returns the correct value (so don't suspect I2C Bus issues).  Is this a valid error condition - status indicating a rail error, but no specific rail error being logged?
