TPS40170-Q1: [TPS40170QRGYRQ1] TPS40170QRGYRQ1 vs TPS40170RGYR / Inquiries about the difference in characteristics

Part Number: TPS40170-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40170, LM25145, LM5146, LM5145,

Hi, TI Support Team

The customer is currently reviewing alternative products due to delivery issues for existing products.

The following inquiries have been received and will be contacted.

1. Operating temperature

- The datasheet has different specs for the temperature specs of the two products.

- Existing product (TPS40170QRGYRQ1): TA

- Substitute (TPS40170RGYR): TJ

- Questions

Is it the same wafer and package?

What is the reason for the difference in operating temperature (specified)?

What is the operating temperature spec for each?

2. ESD Ratings

- Conventional product (TPS40170QRGYRQ1): HBM ±750 / CDM ±500

- Substitute (TPS40170RGYR) : HBM 2000 / CDM 1000

- Question

Why is the "-" side not guaranteed for replacement products?

Thanks.

Regards,

MJ

  • Hi MJ,

    1. The applicable operating junction temperature range is given in the datasheet Recommended Operating Conditions table of the TPS40170 and is the same for both parts: -40 to +125 degC.

    2. + and - are understood for both products (it is not meant to be specified as unipolar).

Note we are now recommending the LM25145/LM5145/LM5146 controller family instead of the TPS40170. It has the same voltage-mode architecture but is lower cost and better performance.

    Tim

  • Hi, Tim

    Thank you for reply.

I have additional inquiries regarding the answer to item 2.

Although it is not described in the handling rating of TPS40170RGYR, can it be understood as a range of + and - in reality?

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    MJ

  • MJ,

Yes, +/- is understood here. The min should be -2000V and -500V for HBM and CDM, respectively.

    Tim

  • Hi, Tim

There was a request for the following information from a customer.

I am asking for help as there is a lack of writing through the datasheet.

Please share information about the table below.

    TPS40170-Q1

    TPS40170

    Ambient temp.

    Operating temp.

    Junction temp.

    Storage temp.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

    MJ

  • Hi MJ,

Only the operating junction temperature and storage temperature are applicable here. The ambient temperature is not really relevant for a power-dissipating IC as the junction operates above ambient based on the J-to-A thermal impedance.

The junction temperature range for both parts is -40°C to 125°C, and the storage temperature range is -55°C to 150°C.

As an aside, I recommend using the LM5145 controller family here as it is lower cost and better performance relative to the TPS40170. The LM5146 100V version is actually rated to 150°C junction.

    Regards,

    Tim
