TLV62085: questions about PFM mode

Part Number: TLV62085

Hi team,

Customer has some questions about TLV62085. Could you support this?

1. Could you tell how to disable the PFM mode?

2. Could you tell the criteira when the device enters the PFM mode?  My undertanding is below.

When the load current goes down below a certain threshold, the device enters the PFM mode. Could you tell the threshold?

3. Is the threshold based on  instantaneous current or average current?

Regards,

Noriyuki Takahashi

  • Hi Noriyuki,

Yes, you are right. The device enters the PFM mode when the load current is below a certain threshold value. During the PFM mode, the switching frequency starts decreasing with the decreasing load currents in order to maintain high efficiency.

So from the switching frequency vs load current characteristics from the datasheet, I would estimate the transition point to be around 300-400 mA.  As you can see that the switching frequency starts decreasing from its typical value (2.4 MHz) as shown in blue in the figure below:

Apart from switching frequency and load current, this transition also depends upon the Vout, Vin, and inductor value. You can find more information on this mode transition in the following app note:  https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/snva857

    Thank you!

    Best regards
