LMR16020: function of Schottky Diode on SW pin

Part Number: LMR16020

HI Team,

i would like to know the Schottky Diode function in below picture. Can we remove it in actual design? if yes, any potential risk will be introduced? Thanks.

  • Hi Hollis,

Using a diode in this design is mandatory since the LMR16020 is a non-synchronous buck (the low side switch is not integrated in the IC). The integrated low side FET in the LMR16020 is only used to recharge the BOOT cap when the high side FET has been on for multiple switching cycles and the voltage from BOOT to SW drops below 3.2V.

The LMR36520 and the LMR38020 are good examples of synchronous bucks, that don't require an external diode, with similar features as the LMR16020. Here is a video that might help you decide if using a non-synchronous buck regulator is right for you.
