Hello Team,
I am Having Li-ion Battery Pack using BQ3050 Gauges.
Can BQ3050 communicate any SBS 1.1 compliant smbus Charger IC ? i.e. In may case it is LTC4100 charger IC at present , which states It has SBS 1.1 compliant SMbus Interface.
LTC4100 is Slave charger IC.
So, that No HOST MCU needed to communicate with BQ3050 guage IC.
Target System is as per following Image :

-Regards
Thanks Shirish,
I thought BQ3050 can work as masters device on Smbus and can initiate communication with any Slave charger IC....
BTW , any TI charger IC you recommend for So...?
Hello Bhupendra,
bq3050 masters the bus only during broadcast. The smart charger would have to be the master unless it can work with just the broadcasts which is unlikely.
The bq40z60 provides charge control. Take a look at its features and see if it can work for your application.
Thanks Shirish for continue support ,
So, using bq40z50 will completely omitt Host MCU and directly connect with charger IC ?
Any recommended charger IC in companione to use with bq50z50 ?
Hello Bhupendra,
See this reference design https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00553
It will make your design process very easy.
Ok.. Shirish,
Will go through It.
Only difference i see here is :Columb counter (BQ3050) vs Impedance Track (bq40z50)....need to check would that suitable to my application or not as LED indication for charger / discharge is MUST for us.
Hello Shirish,
Do we need to configure BQ3050 as master mode and PEC for SBS , OR that will be by default ?
I saw this mention into BQ3050 datasheet (page 21)-

- Bhupendra
Hello Bhupendra,
bq3050 will temporarily become master when it broadcasts. It will be in slave mode at all other times.
OK...then What is the use case of BCAST and CPE bit of Operation Cfg B register. By default BCAST & CPE bit remains 0.
For Charging , Do we just need to provide External voltage and rest charging mechanism will be taken care of by bq40z50 ( as per programmed registers ) ?
Does my Understanding is correct ?
Hello Bhupendra,
Yes, provide external voltage to the reference design and connect battery, then it can work standalone assuming that the registers have been programmed correctly. Note that the reference design uses bq40z60 and not bq40z50
Seems Good Solution.
So, By just Providing FIXED DC voltage for charging , charging and Monitoring Both can be accomplished. Right ?
Can we get its Original CAD / CAM files from TI ? TI website shows only PDF Files.
-Thanks
Yes, the reference design has everything.
TI provides the schematic, Gerber, BOM,PCB layout, symbols for components. These can be used to to build your own CAD/CAM files.
