BQ24031: Connecting fully charged 18650 Lithium-Ion battery

Part Number: BQ24031
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24030,

Hi,

Considering the existing situation, and non-availability of BQ24030 and BQ24032. BQ24031 is the next best alternative. The battery voltage is regulated at 4.1V.

1) will there be a problem if a fully charged battery(4.2V) is connected to BAT pin? will the IC safely reduce the battery voltage to 4.1V?

2) at 4.1V battery will be charged upto ~90%, will there be any issue? expect that battery is charged and regualted at 90%?

Ashok

  • Hi Ashok,

There won't be any problems, the device will see a charged battery (because > 4.1 V) and wait for the battery voltage to fall to the recharge threshold. It will not reduce it down to 4.1V automatically.

at 4.1V battery will be charged upto ~90%, will there be any issue? expect that battery is charged and regualted at 90%?

As you won't be charging the battery as much, this will actually extend the lifetime of the battery. You are correct that the battery is charged to 4.1 V and not at full capacity.
