TPS61097A-33: Compatible with 1.45V battery and BLE devices?

Part Number: TPS61097A-33

I'm using the part as specified (L = 4.7uH, C1-2 = 22uF) with a P13-sized Zinc Air cell to boost ~1.45V to 3.3V. I can use my BLE MCU (CC2652) to perform a blink routine but it fails to power up when using the radio. Is this booster a viable solution given my application?

  • Hi Matt,

Sorry I don't understand what do you mean it fails to power up when using the radio.

Do you have the schematic and layout file? What's the maximum load current for TPS61097A?

  • Hi Zach, attached is the schematic. The physical layout needs some work, but I suppose I'm asking about the theoretical use of the TPS61097A product with a BLE module at this point. Since I can get the MCU to turn on without turning on the BLE radio, I suspect the immediate current draw is causing issues: in this condition, current draw is very high (>35mA) and it causes a voltage drop on my battery, and also at the output of the converter (<.8V), ultimately draining the battery relatively quickly. I see that a load switch may be useful in this situation?

  • Hi Matt,

I didn't find any problem with the schematic.

To find the root cause, you may need to do some bench test to capture the switching waveform of this device such as VIN, SW, VOUT pin.

Normally if a boost converter not regulation well, the issue may relate to switch current limit triggering, causing Vout to decrease. Or as you said, the battery voltage drops to a very low level.

  • I wasn't able to resolve this with a single size 13 battery. It might be a matter of layout/component values. I have switched to a LiPo battery for now. Thanks Zack.
