TPS25820: Using USB-A with the TPS25820

Part Number: TPS25820

I have created a design using a TPS25820 with a USB-C connection. As I was reading through the data sheet I noticed on page 19 of the data sheet the following:

"However
with DCP implementation the port will not support any data transfer, but is capable of advertising charge currents
up to 1.5 A to a legacy device that is connected using a Type-C to Type-A or Micro-B cable. This type of port
allows for wall chargers and car chargers with high-charge capability without the need for enumeration."

Does this mean I have the capability of attaching a female type USB-A port instead of a USB-C port and get the same functionality (1.5A charging current)?

I currently have a design for a charging block which is to have USB-C and USB-A ports, but I am using two difference IC's for each port. I am curious if I can use 2x TPS25820 IC's. One for the USB-C port and one for the USB-A port.

Thanks

  • Hi Will,

    Apologies for the late response.

The TPS25820 is a source controller specifically for Type-C receptacle/connector. The datasheet is saying if there is a legacy device that has a Type-A or Micro-B port, it is capable of advertising charge currents up to 1.5A (for BC1.2 supported device). This device does not have the capability to attach a female Type-A port.
