TPS54228: Minimum bootstrap capacitance requirement

Part Number: TPS54228

Hi team,

Could you give me comment on following customer question? The customer looks for alternative bootstrap cap options due to EoL. Datasheet describes a 0.1uF must be connected, but de-rated value looks to be less than 0.1uF. Also, WEBENCH suggests alternative parts of <0.1uF as de-rated value.

Q1. What is the minimum bootstrap capacitance requirement?

The customer understands 0.1uF is recommended, but alternative cap option can be slightly less than 0.1uF. For that case, the customer wants to have minimum requirement for the bootstrap cap.

Best regards,

Takeshi Sasaki

  • Hi Sasaki-san,

I would recommend using datasheet guidelines to the customer so using a minimum of 0.1uF cap. Typically caps of this value do not have much derating due to voltage bias if using 1206 or 1210 sized X7R ceramic caps. If using 0603 50V 0.1uF X7R cap like in the EVM, the cap value does not dip a whole lot for the voltage levels across the bootstrap cap which is less than 6.5V max. For example, even though the GRM188R72A104MA35 cap derates at higher voltages, the cap value below 6.5V is still 0.1uF.

    Thanks,

    Amod
