TPS62172: Safe to apply external power onto output of voltage regulator?

Part Number: TPS62172

We are using this part in our design to provide 3V3 to a microcontroller. During initial programming of the microcontroller, this buck regulator will not be powered – rather we will supply 3V3 from an external source.

Is it acceptable/safe to put 3V3 on the output of TPS62172DSGR from an external source?

Thank you

-Mike

  • Hi Mike,

The VOS pin is rated for 7V, but the SW pin is rated for Vin+0.3V max.

How were you planning on disabling the device?

I would recommend pulling the EN pin low to disable the buck output and have Vin applied at the input so that the SW pin ratings are not exceeded.

    Thanks,

    Joseph
