TPS7A37: Output capacitor

Part Number: TPS7A37

Hi All,

I have a question about the contents of the datasheet below.

I understand that it is better to use a capacitor with a higher ESR, but is my understanding correct?
For example, if 10uF is used, ESR must be 5mΩ or more. Is this correct?

Best Regards,

Ishiwata

  • Hi Ishiwata-san,

If you are using a single 10-uF capacitor, you probably won't need to worry about ESR because, as noted in the sentences following the underlined sentence, the parasitic resistances for the current loop back to the ground of the device will be sufficient to provide the required ESR. If you are using, for example, 2x4.7uF instead of a single 10uF cap, then you are correct because to a first order approximation, the ESR of parallel capacitors divides like a regular parallel resistor combination.

    Regards,

    Nick
