LMG3410EVM-018: C2,C3 purpose

Part Number: LMG3410EVM-018
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMG34XX-BB-EVM,

Hi team,

Could you explain why C2 and C3 at EVM are required? When there aren't, does the schematic work?

Best regards,

Hayashi

  • Hi Hayashi,

The schematic shared is not the LMG3410EVM-018. The schematic shared is for the LMG34xx-BB-EVM. The difference between the two being LMG3410EVM-018 is a half bridge which contains the two GaN FETs and all required to drive the GaN FETs. The LMG34xx-BB-EVM is the rest of the buck or boost circuitry (inductor and capacitor).

The LMG34xx-BB-EVM has the ability to be used as a buck converter or as a boost converter. When being used as a buck converter C2 and C3 are being used as input capacitors and serve the purpose of reducing voltage ripple in the input DC voltage. When the LMG34xx-BB-EVM is being used as a boost converter C2 and C3 are being used as output capacitors and are reducing the voltage ripple of the output DC voltage. (Lower on the schematic C16 and C17 are serving as input/output capacitors opposite of C2 and C3).

If removed the DC voltage ripple won't be reduced by these capacitors. If the voltage ripple is already low enough then removing them won't matter.
