LP5024: Question for a customer design

Part Number: LP5024
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC5951, LP5860, TLC5947

Hello,

I am an FAE from MM Germany and a customer of mine is designing display panels in RGB technology for a project. The design has several TLC5951 devices are chained on the printed circuit board. They want to switch to a newer design, and I suggested LP5024 for this. They seem satisfied with this, but they have a question, and the question is if the I2C bus is fast enough to supply 5-15 devices with changing data in a 100ms cycle.

Could you help me here?

Best regards,

Erk

  • Hi Erk,

LP5024 only have 4 slaves address, so if they want to use 5-15 devices independently, they may need 2-4 parallel I2C interface from their MCU.

If they need to drive many LED dot from 120 - 360 dot, I really suggest using our device LP5860, each LP5860 can drive up to 198 LED dots or 66 RGB LEDs, I think it is the best solution for customer's need because they only need 1-2 device to drive their LEDs.

    Thanks!

    Best Regards.

  • Thanks Ives!

I already told them about the LP5860, but it unfortunately doesn't work for them. I'll ask if the LP5024 still is acceptable.

    Thank you very much.

    Best,

    Erk

  • Hello again Ives,

I've contacted the customer and this is what they had to say:

"more than two "free" I2C interfaces per MCU we have not over.
Maybe you have something else there.
At the beginning of next year we will decide about a modernization of the design of our system.
If necessary, new requirements will arise then."

So definitely not enough. However, hey won't accept the LP5860 as well, because their design requires 24 outputs (8x3 RGB) per device( at least he said it was the optimal number for their applications)

Do you have any other alternatives in mind?

    Best regards,

    Erk

  • Hi Erk,

I'm curious about customer's application, I want to know for what reason they need 24 outputs per device, because I think use less devices to drive may be the better way for their design.

For 24 outputs driver, I think we don't have new device except LP5024, but because its 4 slave address, it is not suitable for customer's requirement (5-15) device.

I think the device based on shift register which they are using (TLC5951/TLC5947) is better solution for them.

    Thanks!
