TPS1HB16-Q1: Capacitive Load Driving

Part Number: TPS1HB16-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS1H100-Q1, TPS2H160-Q1

I have an application where some devices downstream of our TPS1HB16A-Q1 smart high side switches have large input capacitances (50-100 uF). As expected, when attempting to turn on power to these devices, the current rapidly ramps to the current limit setpoint (I've experiment with setting the current limit up to the max of 22A). The switch then immediately (after a few microseconds) shuts off.

However, in this application note here: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slvae30e/slvae30e.pdf?ts=1670458100022, it describes that these high side switches can be used to drive capacitive loads. It says it will do this by clamping the current to the adjustable current limit (rather than shutting off completely). Reviewing the datasheets of the other smart high side switches in the series, specifically the lower current ones like TPS2H160-Q1 or TPS1H100-Q1, I see that the datasheets describe this current clamping functionality:

"External programmable current limit -- An external resistor is used to convert a proportional load current into a voltage, which is compared with an internal reference voltage, Vth,cl. When the voltage on the CL pin exceeds Vth.cl, a closed loop steps in immediately. VGS voltage regulates accordingly, leading to the Vds voltage regulation. When the closed loop is set up, the current is clamped at the set value. The external programmable current limit provides the capability to set the current-limit value by application."

However, I don't see anything similar in the datasheet for the TPS1HB16A-Q1. Is there a way to enable similar functionality for the TPS1HB16A-Q1 or is its only behavior to shut off when the current limit is exceeded?

More generally, is there any way to directly drive large capacitive loads using the TPS1HB16A-Q1?

  • Hi Ilia,

TPS1HB16A is an immediate shutdown device. To drive capacitive loads, a device that clamps current has to be selected. We offer TPS1HB35C, TPS2HB35C, TPS1HA08C for capacitive charging at low Ron.

We also offer TPS1HC30 which is our new generation 30mOhm high side switch that clamps current.

    Best,

    Shreyas
