BQ24232H: Question about "precharge to fast-charge transition"

Part Number: BQ24232H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24078, BQ25606, BQ25601,

Hi team,

My customer has another question on "precharge to fast-charge transition"

Please see the request from customer, thank you.

"

Because these 3 linear charger parts, BQ24232H, BQ24232HA, BQ24078 have a minimum 2.9V. But other switching chargers have a minimum 3V, like BQ25601, BQ25606 etc.

I'm wondering what's the reason linear charger ICs can't have a minimum 3V. Is it possible to change this value to above 3V(minimum)? Through external circuits?

"

  • Hi Oliver,

The pre-charge to fast charge voltage threshold can vary but typically close to 3V. Some of our switching chargers such as the BQ2419x also have typical value at 3V (min value <3V).

This threshold is a fixed value in the design and cannot be changed.

Typically this value is not very critical in the charging process. Is there any particular reason customer need it to be at 3V min?

  • Customer battery spec is 3V. If the charger IC changes to fast charge below 3V, that may cause our battery reduce capacity permanently. This is a concern for us to use 2.9V transition voltage charger IC.

If bq24232H or linear charger ICs have no room to improve, for long term solution, we may need to find linear charger IC with I2C control and transition voltage also needs to be higher than 3V.

Do you have any suggestion or device for the long term solution?

  • Hi Oliver,

Does the battery spec for the precharge to fast charge voltage threshold 3V a typical spec or abs min spec?

Is it possible to share the battery spec with us?

We typically have 3V as the typical value. We will log this to our backlog and if we see more of this requirement in the future, we will look into implement to our new devices. As of now, our new releases have precharge to fast charge transition voltage threshold at <=3V typical
