BQ25723: Is it possible to measure battery capacity with the MCU from info provided by the charger?

Part Number: BQ25723

We are currently in schematic entry phase. Trying to see if it would be possible to get a percentage reading of battery capacity within 1 or 2% without a separate fuel gauge IC.

The BQ25723 has IBAT and I think it provides the battery voltage as well through i2c registers. Would it be possible to use these current/voltage values and have the MCU as the coulumb counter?

Thank you

Regards

  • Hi Jose,

It is possible, but very difficult. It is not a matter of what the charger IC can do (it can only give you current and voltage reading through ADC), it is a question of your ability to come up with the algorithm and how confident you are in your own MCU algorithm. Li-ion battery can be very delicate and dangerous.

I recommend using a dedicated fuel gauge.

    Thanks,

    Peng
