TPS6213013A-Q1: About Efficiency and Noise

Part Number: TPS6213013A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62130A-Q1, , TPS62902-Q1, TPS62903-Q1, LM61430-Q1

Webench shows me below  comparison results:

  • LM61430AAS-Q1

Efficiency: 91.9%, Switching Freq: 2.17 MHz.

  • TPS62130A-Q1

Efficiency: 89.9%, Switching Freq: 1.34 MHz.

I don't understand why the efficiency of TPS62130A-Q1 is lower than LM61430AAS-Q1 nevertheless TPS62130A-Q1 is working at lower frequency.

And, I want to know the generated noise profile or some tendencies when I use above 2 regulators.

Additionally, I want to avoid AM band.

I'd like to know what kind of problem will occur when I don't consider about AM band.

  • Can you share the input, output conditions used for comparison of efficiency in WEBENCH?

As you will see in Figures 27 to 34 in datasheet of TPS6213013A-Q1, the frequency varies quite a bit. Specifically, with TPS6213013A-Q1, which delivers 1.3V output, the frequency will overlap with the AM band frequency. So, unfortunately, this converter may not be suitable for your needs.

Typically, when switching in the AM band, there could be interference with other electronic equipment like radio which you want to avoid in order for correct functioning. If a buck converter is operating in the AM radio frequency range, it can generate EMI that can interfere with AM radio reception. This interference can manifest as noise, distortion, or complete loss of the radio signal.

If you can provide the Vin range, and Iout range, I can try to find more converters which may fit your needs.

    Thanks,

  • Thank you for your fast reply.

    The conditions are as follow:

    V_in is 6--16 V, nominal 12 V.

    V_out is 3.3V @ 2A max with 100% load-steps.
    V_out max deviation is 3% after start-up.

Ambient temperature is -40--+85 Cel. deg.

And I focused on its efficiency, but small size is the first priority

  • I would recommend the newest TPS62902-Q1 which is about to release in a week or two on ti.com. For now, you can refer to TPS62903-Q1 datasheet which is already released. Performance on efficiency/frequency is identical on both devices. TPS62902-Q1 is limited to 2A however.

For 3.3V output, you can see Figure 9-54 and how frequency stays out of AM band completely in your VIN operating region when in PWM operation. And efficiency curve is Figure 9-52 which is quite high. Please let me know if this device works for you.

    Thank you for your information.

I'd appreciated if you could answer this question.

    • why the efficiency of TPS62130A-Q1 is lower than LM61430AAS-Q1 nevertheless TPS62130A-Q1 is working at lower frequency

This is just from my curiosity.

What about load dumping for TPS62130A-Q1?

    Regards,

  • I see a 1.176MHz Fsw on your LM61430-Q1 WEBENCH design report vs 1.337MHz Fsw on TPS62130A-Q1. In addition, the HSFET and LSFET Rdson values are much lower on the LM61430-Q1 which will help boost efficiency especially at higher currents.

If you want to avoid the AM band, I would recommend using frequencies greater than 1.71MHz on both devices. You can choose the 2.5MHz option on TPS62130A-Q1 and possibly 2.2MHz on LM61430-Q1. Also, please consider the TPS62903-Q1 here.

    Thanks,
