UCC27517A: Gate Driver for GaN

Customer is working on >700W Motor Drive system and the 3phase inverter is using stand-along GaN FET.

Vgs=6V, Frequency=50KHz

We're considering of ISO7710DR + UCC27517 for the high side of the Inverter. Do you think it's workable or any concern? Thanks.

    There is no problem with using an isolator + low-side to drive a high-side. Here is an example topology:

    In this case it is UCC27531, but the same concept applies to UCC27517. I would suggest using UCC27517A if possible, as the greater transient immunity on the input pin could help given that everything on the high side would be floating. Also, if you want 100% duty support you will need a bias supply rather than a bootstrap, which is pretty common in motor drive.

    Lastly, make sure you/the customer checks the parametric curves for the device's performance at 6V. The device can support it, but there will be lower drive strength and longer propagation delays. There are other devices like LM5114 or UCC27614 that may work better at that voltage. Of course, our GaN drivers are best optimized for performance at 5V, but none support 6V as of now.
