BQ79606A-Q1: Auto-Addressing Procedure with Bq79600 as Bridge Chip

Hello! I am working with a BQ79600 bridge IC and a stack of BQ79606A monitoring ICs.

I am trying to figure out the correct auto-addressing procedure. The datasheet for the BQ79600 lists an example for an auto address procedure using the BQ79616 chips, but no the 79606 chips.

There are a few conflicts which aren't clear. For example, in both datasheets, it says to set the CONTROL1 register to 0x01 to enable auto-addressing.

However, CONTROL1 has a different value on the BQ79606 vs the BQ79600, so I am a bit confused. Do I use a broadcast command for both values?

Any clarifications and an example procedure would help.

Good morning Kareen,

I understand where your confusion is coming from. The auto-addressing procedure listed in the 600 datasheet does not reflect the procedure for using a 606A as a stack.

I recommend using the info in the 600 datasheet to address the base device (600) as address 0x00, then use the procedure in the 606A datasheet to address the stacks such as [ADD_WRITE_EN]=1, broadcast write DEVADD_USR[ADD] with consecutive addresses, and then setting the TOS, and stack.

This will take some experimentation but read from the DEV_ADD_STAT registers of the stacks to see what their current addresses are to make sure you are doing it correctly.

Could you help me understand which part of the 600 procedure is just for setting the base address of the bridge module?

I assume it would be something like:

1. Single device write 0x01 to address 0x309 (enable auto addressing)

2. Single device write 0x00 to 0x306 setting the 600 device to address 0

Now the bridge device should have the address 0 and I can proceed with addressing the 606 devices?

Hello Keenan,

Sorry I realized I spelled your name wrong above.

Yes, register 0x306 will set the address, You will have to do a broadcast write of 0x00 to register 0x306. You can read back that register with the device address of 0x00 and you should see the correct address. Don't forget to also set the top of stack as well. The 0x00 address should automatically be the base device. Double check you have communication by writing something to the devices. The GUIs are great places to easily prototype.

FYI I was just directed to this post which says: "No, we do not support the BQ79600 as the base device for a stack of BQ79606A's. The communication tones have changed and so not all features are supported which is why we do not recommend using it."

This explains why I was not able to get it working and why the documentation was unclear.

Yes thanks Quentin. I would highly suggest that someone on the TI team clarifies that in the BQ79600 datasheet. At least two of us and several TI employees have been confused on the unclarity and it has wasted a fait bit of time and money on everyone's part.
