TPS54310: Compensation network parameters in SLVA109 application note

Part Number: TPS54310
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS628503, TPS628303, TPS62826, TPS628513

Hello,

My customer is trying to adjust compensation network parameters of TPS54310 with the below document.

Designing With the TPS54310 Synchronous Buck Regulator(SLVA109-December 2001).

They are wondering how to calculate some parameters in Equation 7 to 16.

1.N_C

N_C is used in some equations and which is described as “the number of output capacitors in parallel”.

Doesn’t this N_C depends on the capacitor value?

For example, when using 2 capacitors in parallel for COUT like 22u+22u, 20u+10u, 20u+1u or any combination of 2 capacitor values, is N_C simply “2” for all cases?

2 ESR_MAX

2-a

In Equation 8, ESR_MAX is calculated. When using multiple capacitors in parallel for COUT, how to think about this ESR_MAX?

For example, now C1(ESR=R1) and C2(ESR=R2) in parallel for COUT. What is ESR_MAX in this case?

2-b

In Equation 9 and 10, is this ESR_MAX the value calculated by equation 8? Or Other value? If other value, how to think about it when using multiple capacitors in parallel for COUT?

3 COUT
In Equation 14 and 15, COUT is described as capacitance of a single output capacitor.

Same, question. For example, now C1(ESR=R1) and C2(ESR=R2) in parallel for COUT. What is COUT value in this case?

4 ESR

In Equation 16, ESR is described as the ESR rating of a single output capacitor.

Same, question. For example, now C1(ESR=R1) and C2(ESR=R2) in parallel for COUT. What is ESR value in this case?

  • Hi Oba,

Any particular reason why the customer wants to use this part? It is an old device using a voltage mode control system and has much lower performance than our newer parts.

TPS628513, TPS62826, TPS628303 or TPS628503 are much better alternatives to use here.

It would be hard to find the values of the parameters in those equations when the customer uses different output caps. For example, if you use caps of different values, the RMS currents through them will be different. This will effect the max ESR calculations and thereby the compensation network values.

    Best regards,

    Varun

  • Hello Varun,

    Thanks for your reply.
The reason is that this is just a minor update model of the product using TPS54310.

    Oba
