UCC25600: Is it possible to use it in full bridge LLC?

Part Number: UCC25600
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC256404, UCC25640

The UCC25600 is a half-bridge LLC controller, but is it possible to use it in full-bridge LLC in combination with another gate driver IC?

  • Hi Fukumoto-san,

We do not have any reference design examples doing this. Can you share what power level you are trying to support? Our best solution for a full bridge is our phase-shifted full bridge (UCC28951).

Do you think this can work for you?

  • Thank you for your reply.
The power level is 200W, but since we want to boost the voltage to about 4 times the voltage, we would like to use a full bridge to suppress the primary side current as much as possible. Also, I would like to use LLC instead of phase shift.

I found the answer below in the forum, so I thought that the UCC25600 can be used with a full bridge LLC, so I asked the question.

Thanks for reaching out. The resonant capacitor voltage and resonant current would need to be translated down to ground referenced signals for the controller to understand. There is the additional challenge of translating the HO gate signal to a ground referenced signal in order to drive the low side of the other half bridge. I would say UCC25600 is a better fit for full bridge LLC for analog control. It is a direct frequency control LLC that has two ground referenced gate signals. It will be much easier to realize a full bridge with UCC25600 compared to UCC256404.

  • Hi Fukumoto-san,

While it may be possible to implement a full bridge LLC with the UCC25600 we have no examples of actually doing this. You are correct that this is not possible with the UCC25640 series.

For 200W normally you can achieve the desired efficiency with a half-bridge LLC. What is the actual input voltage range are you looking to support?

  • Thank you for your reply.
The input range is 18.2V to 27.8V.
In the case of a half-bridge, the maximum primary current is approximately 26A.
In order to downsize the board, I would like to use a full bridge, which reduces the primary current by half.
Since full bridge is possible with UCC25600, I will consider using UCC25600 once.
