TPS61236P: can TPS61236 be used as mobile phone charger?

Part Number: TPS61236P

Hello guys,

One of my customers is considering using TPS61236P for USB charging port of their products.

At this moment, they have the following questions.
Could you please give me your reply?

Q1. Can this device be used for mobile phone charging on USB charging port?

Q2. What is happen when a mobile phone which has fast charging mode is connected to TPS61236P which set to 1A current limit by a resistor located between CC pin -GND? Is the phone charged without any problem?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

Add Travis to support this thread, who is more familiar with this part.

  • Hi Kazuya,

Sorry for the late reply, there's something wrong with our assignment system.

    About your question:

Q1. What is your input voltage? TPS61236P do not support Vin>Vout-0.6V. So if you have a Vin close to 5V, the device cannot work.

Q2. Usually mobile phones have an internal controller(PD controller A) which will communicate with another controller on the your charger(PD controller B) . The mobile phone will not be charged if the communication is not established. Also,TPS61236P do not support output voltage over 6V, so even if you have the PD controller B, fast charging still can not be achieved.

    Travis

  • Hi Travis,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Could I ask you an additional question?

    Q. If the connected mobile phone to TPS61236P is not fast charging type, can the mobile phone be charged by TPS61236P though the communication is not established?

Thank you again and best regards,
    Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

No, most phones needs to communicate about the charging protocols, even for 5V charging devices. Without communication, your charger don't know when to stop charging and will overcharge the battery.

    Travis

  • Hi Travis,

Thank you very much for your reply.
Could I ask you one more question?

    Q.
I heard from my colleague that a power supply like Apple 5W AC adapter can continues output 5V/1A without negotiations and battery charging control system (CC/CV mode control, Over voltage protection for battery etc.) is implemented in a mobile phone side. So I think TPS61236P could be used for charging for mobile phone which doesn't have fast charging mode like I iPhone 8 and 9.

    I my thought correct?

Thank you again and best regards,
    Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

I'm familiar with old generation USB charging devices so I'm assigning this thread to USB team.

    Best Regards,

    Travis

  • Sorry, I mean I'm not familiar with old generation USB charging devices.
