LM51231-Q1: PSPICE reference design

Hi TI experts,

Do you have a PSPICE reference design for LM5123(1) that is running without convergence issues? Customer wanted to run a simulation for a 24Vin, 56V, 2A output boost application but haven't succeeded due to convergence issues. Even after fine tuning the simulation parameters in PSPICE there was no success.

I tried to run a simulation in Webench for the given requirements but also that doesn't work.

Hope You can help. Thanks & BR,

KF

  • Hi KF,

Thanks for reaching out. I've already tried to replicate your requirements in Webench and it ran without any problems, with an efficiency of 96.3%.
I picked the inputs of: Vin between 22-26V; Vout=56V; Iout=2A. The duty cycle's also within the acceptable range.

Please reach out to me if the simulation still doesn't run after using the component parameters proposed by Webench.
Are you using the regular pSpice or 'pSpice for TI'?

    Thank you and best regards,
    Bryan

  • Hi Bryan,

It's Regular Pspice, Cadence Pspice V22,1.

As for Webench, I meant to refer to the feature to simulate eg a load transient. Webench tells me that simulation is not enabled for this design.

  • Hi KF,

Thanks for answering my questions. Now I understand what you mean by Webench doesn't work, it seems that a simulation is indeed not possible in there.

Right now, I assume that the pSpice model starts but doesn't give any values that make sense, is this right? Or do you mean with convergence issues that the model doesn't produce any values at all?

If the values don't make sense, but the simulation starts, it would be great if you could share the schematic with me and possibly fill out the LM51231 Quickstart Calculator and share the excel file with me as well. In this way I can verify that there isn't a issue with the design.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Bryan

  • Hi Bryan,

I sent you an email with a link to download the PSPICE project.

In the Pspice project, there are the LM51231 that doesn’t work and the LM5156 that has correct simulation output. The two designs have no convergence problem. The simulation time is very long for both devices but the LM51231 do not give a coherent output which is my main concern. The spice model of LM51231 is encrypted so no way to understand where the problem is.

Thanks a lot & Best Regards,
    KF

  • Hi KF,

Thanks for the message, I received your files.
I'll close this thread and we can follow this up per e-mail if that's okay with you.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Bryan

  • Hi Bryan - yes, that's fine with me.
