LP8764-Q1: LP8764-Q1-Power monitoring Feature

Part Number: LP8764-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP87563-Q1

Dear Team,

I have plan to use LP8764-Q1 part in my new design.I got some doubts on the current monitoring feature of LP8764-Q1.

In device datasheet section 8.7  output voltage monitor and power good generation, there we can see that voltage and current monitoring can be selected for PGOOD indication.
I want to know, how do we monitor the current/power of each voltage rail through I2C ?
is this device will support current moniotr feature through I2C software control?

Regards,
Sujith M

  • Hi Sujith,

Yes, we can use PGOOD for indication of fault or nINT as well. Monitoring is built-in feature meaning its selected to be enabled in the device and device does it autonomously and will just report fault out if that happens. Feature cannot be used to read-out any voltage or current values.

So to your second question, based on interrupts we can see what caused it but we cannot see actual voltage or current level through I2C.

  • Hi Jari,

    Thanks for your information,

I have selected a new part LP87563-Q1 with current monitoring feature. Could you please check and confirm this part can i use it for my application?
Regarding inductor selection i couldn't find any formula to calculate the required inductance. Please advise how do we select the required inductance?

    Thanks,
    Sujith M

  • Hi Sujith,

Yes, LP87563-Q1 has average current monitoring and can be used over I2C. It also has others features but to fully utilize default configuration for your system new custom OTP/OPN might be needed.

Theses devices has fixed inductor setting because feedback loop is also fixed. No need to calculate anything. Just pick recommended components per datasheet.
