BQ76952: Unable to remove SCDL and OCDL protection via payload detection

Hi Team,

1. MOS enables in-line mode.

2. Short-circuit latch protection and over-current latch protection can be triggered normally, and the protection can also be released after the charging current is detected by connecting to the charger.

3.  After this configuration, the LD_ON flag cannot be seen on the Registers interface. And the LD Pin Voltage does not increase. It is clear that the external resistance of LD is 20kΩ and no load is connected.

4. After disabling load detection by setting the value of the Load Detect -> Active Time register equal to 0, load detection can be turned on via Commands LOAD_DETECT_ON. At the same time, he can see that the LD_ON flag position rises, and the LD Pin Voltage pin voltage rises to close to the BAT+ voltage. (The customer can use this function to ensure that his external circuit is indeed fine.)

    Are there any logs of these events?

    If I am understanding correctly, when OCDL/SCDL triggers, the LD current source is not turning on, correct? When you want it to turn-on, so that it is able to detect the load removal. Have you tried using the 0x009D LOAD_DETECT_RESTART() subcommand to see if the LD source turns-on?

    It sounds that if you manually turn-on the load-detect source, there are no problems.

    gg.csv will be provided by the customer later.  (Or could you refer to the content of cc.csv provided in the post?)

    Regarding the time log, the customer is currently in the preparatory state of research and development and is making a small prototype to test the chip function, so it is unable to provide a practical log.

    Yes, your understanding is correct.  He has tried using the x009D LOAD_DETECT_RESTART() subcommand to view the LD source opening, and it can be opened normally using the subcommand.

    The .gg.csv file would make it a bit easier for me to analyze. But looking at it, at first glance I do not see anything wrong. Since LOAD_DETECT_RESTART()  seems to work, it almost sounds like the LD source is for some reason timing out.

    LOAD_DETECT_RESTART() is invalid. But LOAD_DETECT_ON works fine.

    I see now. The settings seem to be okay. Is it possible for the customer to take a log in bqStudio during these tests?

    Also, it may be good to see if they can use a probe on the LD pin during these events to see if there's any activity there.

    The ripple is relatively large because the customer uses a voltage regulator to supply power to the SRN pin. The isolation of the voltage regulator source is not very well, so the waveform is rough.

    Is it possible that the load voltage cannot be detected due to a circuit design problem? What creates a current loop after the LD pin turns on the internal constant current? Because CHGFET and DSGFET are not placed, the customer considers whether the voltage on the LD pin is always low due to this.

    The customer used the BQStdio tool log data, and he repeated the short-circuit protection process three times. Only the last time it was found that LD_ON was set, but he configured Retry Delay = 0.

    Customer understanding is that whenever an SCDL or OCDL fault occurs and the DSG FET is turned off, the device can be configured to detect load removal and recover. Is it correct?

    Retry Delay = 0, Active Time = 15. Theoretically LD_ON will always be enabled, but it is not detected.

    SLEEP mode is disabled and AFE cannot enter SLEEP state.

    In the third test, it was found that LD_ON was enabled, but the BQ76952 did not clear the OCDL protection. (USERV = 10mV)

    The customer can configured Settings:Protection:Protection Configuration [OCDL_CURR_RECOV] to recover like this, based on your cc file, this bit seems to be zero out. How does the customer wants to recover OCDL? 

    Can you clarify if the LOAD_DETECT_RESTART() has any effect? 

    In addition, is really hard to understand the scope capture with all the ripple, can the customer find a cleaner source and recapture? Or moved the channels so all signals can be observed at once?

    What is the current direction of the internal constant current source for load detection?

  • Hello Annie,

    There is a current source between BAT and LD. Flowing current from BAT to the LD pin, the current source current is in the datasheet:

    If there's a load attached, the LD voltage would remain pretty low. If there's no load attached, the voltage on the LD pin would go towards the BAT voltage.

    There's more explanations in Section 5.2.18 Load Detect Functionality of the Technical Reference Manual.
