UCC27282-Q1: is UCC27282-Q1 fit for BLDC/PMSM motor gate driver?

Part Number: UCC27282-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27282

Hi expert,

From datasheet, the UCC27282 is quite fit for BLDC/PMSM motor gate driver, such as interlock protection, negtive voltage protection, integrated bootstrap diode, small package, etc. But in datasheet, I didn't see motor driver application. For many other gate drivers, motor driver application will be noted in application area. Is UCC27282 not fit for motor driver?

Thanks

Peter

  • Hi Peter,

    Thanks for reaching out.

UCC27282 can be used for DC-DC converters used in motor drive application. We do have customers use our half-bridge gate driver in BLDC/PMSM application. I believe author of the datasheet may have intended to include all DC-DC converter, including motor drives.

    Regards,

    Ritesh

  • Hi Ritesh,

Thanks for quick response. For Motor PWM application, the PWM frequency is usually several dozens KHz. For example, if it's 30KHz,  is 1uF bootstrap enough?

    Thanks

    Peter

  • Hi Peter,

The bootstrap capacitor depends on the total gate charge (or total load charge on the gate driver output) and the bias voltage ripple. Yes, the duty cycle and the frequency will also play the role in deciding the bootstrap capacitor. This procedure is explained in the section 8.2.2.1 (Select Bootstrap and VDD Capacitor) of the datasheet (partly shown below). 10s of kHZ of switching frequency is no concern for UCC27282.

We recommend that customer follow this procedure. Oversizing or under-sizing of this capacitor has other design impacts and thus it is better if these values are optimized.

Please let us know if you have any question.

  • Thanks Ritesh.
