TLC59283: What is the optimal voltage to power 7 segment displays with this part?

Part Number: TLC59283

Hello,

I'm using a few TLC59283 ICs to drive seven segment displays, HDSP-521G, Vf = 2.0V. For highest efficiency and least heating of the TLC59283, what would be the best voltage to supply the LED displays with? 3.3V or 5.0V? I think I only need about 20mA per segment.

Also, is there a way to use one potentiometer to control the current on threeTLC59283 ICs? Client wants a common brightness control for all the digits.

Thank you,

Derek

  • Hi Derek,

    Please refer the below figure:

You can see in the above figure that if you need about 20mA per segment, then you only need about 0.5V dropout voltage on your output. So based on your forward voltage of LED, Vf=2V. I think the 3.3V is enough.
