TPS562203: Max. ambient temperature for a 3.3V / 2.0A output

Part Number: TPS562203

Dear support team,

acc. the datasheet of the TPS562203 several thermal metrics are listed.

Now i want to determine the max. allowed ambient temperature of the following use case:

Vin=12V, Vout=3.3V, Iout=2A

Acc. datasheet the efficiency of this operating point is approx. 90%.

Output power is 3.3V*2A=6.6W ... 90% efficiency results in 7.33W input power and therfore 0.73W power dissipation on the TPS562203.

What is you suggestion to determine the max. allowed ambient temperature.

  • Hi Markus,

    As you can see from thermal information, Rthetaja_effective which is junction to ambient thermal resistance on EVM board is 73C/W.

    Here 0.73W power loss which you calculated from datasheet efficiency results not only includes the die loss but also other loss especially including inductor loss.

    I would suggest you can use Webench simulation tool to get IC Tj curve. (The results are based on Rthetaja_effective of EVM board). The ƟJA varies with the different PCB layers, layout and FR4 materials. Note that EVM board is 2 layer and both 2oz for top and bottom.

    BRs
