LM5158: Output Overvoltage

Part Number: LM5158

Lm5158 datasheet states that it has over-voltage protection when FB pin voltage exceeds Vref by 10%. Please share what is LM5158's behavior if top-side feedback resistor gets open.

  • Hi KrnB,

Thanks for using the e2e forum.
The overvoltage protection is tied to the FB pin.
If the high side resistor fails and FB pin is just connected to GND, the device will continue to operate with maximum duty cycle until the overcurrent protection at the CS pin is triggered.
It is expected that the output voltage would reach much higher than the target output voltage before OCP is triggered.

Please make sure the FB resistor divider is always connected properly.
If an additional overvoltage protection is desired, this can be realized with an external circuit that pulls down the UVLO pin in case of overvoltage to disable the device.

    Best regards,
    Niklas
