UCC21530-Q1: UCC21530 gate drive

Part Number: UCC21530-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC21530

Tool/software:

Hello, I am using the UCC21530 gate driver to drive Half bridge and during lightneing pulse test, the gate driver is damaged (only one / 3, always the same which is damaged). I suspect maybe decoupling capacitors not closed to the IC or itrack paracitic inductance or something else. Can you support me on this topic, please? thank you.

  • Hello Ali,

Thanks for reaching out. In order to better understand the problem and help with debugging, can you provide the following information?

    • Schematic and layout of the PCB
    • Test conditions. I assume you're doing high voltage surge tests - what's the test voltage and how is it applied on the board? If the half bridge is switching during the test, also provide the switching frequency, bus voltage and load current (if any).
    • What failure is seen from the gate driver? What pins are shorted together?
    • Any waveforms you capture during the failure event. Make sure the probes have short ground loop, and use isolated probes where applicable

From the initial information, if the schematic is the same for all of the half bridges, then I highly suspect it is something related to the layout. Decoupling capacitor being too far can definitely be one of the reasons; you can check VCC and VDD voltages to see if they exceed absmax during the testing. In addition, depending on what pins are shorted together (primary side vs. secondary side), I would recommend checking the voltage on the same side as the failure. If the pin voltage exceeds absmax, that can explain the damages.

Thank you and please let me know of any findings.
