UCC28C53-Q1: Short circuit protection

Part Number: UCC28C53-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28C56H

Tool/software:

Dear Team ,

in the EVB of the UCC28C56H Q1, we can see the Short circuit to Ground waveforms. I have some qtns on that pls reply :

1. Does the UCC28Cxx family supports Output SC protection?

2. Pls explain how does your waveforms appeared, cause I have developed the flyback and tested SC at output side , result I found that IC & MOSFET damage.

Regards,

Manoj.

  • During short circuit operation, there can still be a high amount average RMS power dissipation happening in the MOSFET and current sense resistor.. The current is limited to a max value and folds back to protect the power stage but the SiC must still be able to handle the power dissipation. Also, be aware of what is the SiC gate drive amplitude during the time the converter is retrying to start while the output is short circuit. If the VGS is lower than what you designed it to be during steady state, the SiC RDS can increase rapidly causing tremendous power dissipation that may not have been planned for even during steady state operation.  Maybe try a soft overload condition and observe how the converter is behaving, then work your way up to a short circuit condition. You can also order the EVM from TI here and compare short circuit behavior against your design.
