Part Number: TPS61170EVM-316
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61170, USB-TO-GPIO2,

Tool/software:

Hi guys,

I'm testing TPS61170 with this enviroment;

- TPS61170-316

- USB Interface Adapter (2022) FW: 2.1.0.0

- TPS6116x Controller Software V2.0.0.0

- OS: W10PRO

The EVM is working correctly without control board but when I connect the control software i have this problem :

I followed this thread, without succes.

Can you help me ?

Thank you

  • Hi Stefano,

Did you see any firmware update pop-up like below? Could you try the latest GUI (downloaded here https://www.ti.com/tool/TPS61160EVM-243) and plug out and in the USB cable to trigger the firmware update?

    Regards

    Lei

  • Hi Lei,

the SW is the same downloaded from your link and the FW update pop-up is not appears.

  • Hi Stefano,

What's the Operating System of your PC? If it's Win 11, please try Win 10 or even earlier version if possible.

When you plug-in the cable to your PC, is the TPS61170EVM connected as well? Please try both the TPS61170EVM connected and not connected.

Sorry I don't know the definite ways to trigger the firmware update, so I'd like your help to do above trying.

    Regards

    Lei

  • Hi Lei

as I write in my first post:

    - OS: W10PRO

    - Operating Sistem: Windows 10 Profetional

The EVM is correctly connected to the USB Interface: the enable is drive high fixed, Check with the oscilloscope and no other transition on the enable singnal.

I have check all connection sequence possible.

I understand your trouble on this issue and I I’m pleased to assist you with these measurements.

You are checking why the update is not requested by the board, but are you shure that the firmware is updated yet ?

If I launch the Fusion updated tool or Fusion Digital Power Designer,  I see:

Is it  correct the FW 2.1.0.0 ?

I think that the adapter is working correctly.

My doubdt that the probelm is related to the TPS6116x Controller Software that may be incompatible with this adapter FW version.

    I'm waiting your suggestion

    Thank You for your support

    Best Regards

    Stefano

  • Hi Stefano,

Sorry I missed your OS information.

I tried the connection just now. All the SW and HW are new. Which means, the SW was also downloaded and installed just now. The adaptor and EVM were new. Finally the connection was successful.

My OS on PC is Windows 10 Professional.

I just summarized the following 6 steps I did minutes ago. Please try again.

    Regards

    Lei

  • Hi Lei,

    these are the performed step:

    - I remove the previous installation of the TPS6116x EVM

    - Disconnect the USB Interface Adapter

    - Download the SLVC422 — TPS6116x-70EVM Software Setup , from your link

    - Install the SW launching setup.exe.

    - plug again the USB Interface Adapter

    - the device is recognized as USB2GPIO:

    - Launch the Rirmare Flashing Utility and the result is this:

On your adapter witch version is loaded after the update ?

    Thank You

    Best Regards

    Stefano

  • Hi Stefano,

Before firmware update, the rev is 1.0.9. After update, it's 18.3.3.

Here are more information for your reference:

The following pop-up means your adaptor is not connected to your PC successfully.

If I didn't connect the adaptor to my PC and click below, I'll see the same pop-up.

    Following is the successful information.

Here is the adaptor I used.

I think the root cause is that your PC can't recognize the USB input. I just tried on my colleague's PC, after plug-in the USB, without any special steps such as install a driver, the PC can recognize the USB input.

Could you try on another PC if available?

    Regards

    Lei

  • Dear Lei, I've try with a pc of my collegue and it is the same. You are working with a ver old device, my device is a production of 2022. Can you repeat the test with a recend adapter ?.

Have you see this thread ?

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management-group/power-management/f/power-management-forum/1158777/usb-to-gpio2-need-for-firmwere-to-redownload

I have see many tread with a problem wth this adapter

  • UPDATE ANSWER:

If you say that the problem is the USB2GPIO firmware is is possible intall a correct FW by using Fusion USB Afapter Firmare Image ?

    This is the relative GUI:

    Thank You

    Stefano

  • Hi Stefano,

During my connection handling I don't use or see the GUI you showed.

Sorry I don't have a newer adaptor at hands. I will apply for a new one and then try. It takes time for this new adaptor.

I suggest that you may open a new thread with part number USB-TO-GPIO2. With so the experts for this adaptor may give more helpful suggestions.

    Regards

    Lei

  • Hello Lei,

Following up on this thread that was copied here (+) USB-TO-GPIO2: TPS61170EVM-316: Control software with USB-TO-GPIO do not work - Power management forum - Power management - TI E2E support forums

From Stefano's screenshots above it is clear that the USB-TO-GPIO2 is being detected by Fusion Digital Power Designer and Device Manager. I can also see it has the latest firmware 2.1.0.0. When the USB-TO-GPIO2 was developed, the Fusion Digital Power Designer team updated the software to be compatible with the new adapter. When you get the 2022 adapter, please confirm for Stefano if the TPS61170EVM Software is compatible with the new adapter.

    Best regards,

    Britton

  • Hi Britton,

    Thanks for your information.

    Lei

  • Hi Stefano,

I tried to apply for a 2022 adapter but currently it's not available.

To make your project move forward in time, here are my suggestions:

    1. You may apply for a TPS61170EVM-316 by TI FAE or buy one, as I know there will be a 2006 adaptor contained in the EVM box. Which is the same adaptor I used without problems.
    2. You may program the TPS61170 Vref by force a PWM signal on the CTRL pin.
    3. Skip the TPS61170 GUI, generate the specific patterns and then program the TPS61170, although it may take much more efforts.

Just let me know if you see any concerns.

    Regards

    Lei

  • Hi Lei,

    about your suggestion:

1 yesturday I receive another EVM but the same adaptor 2022 is contained.

2 I have used used the PWM and is working

3 The genaration of the pattern can be done using the adaptor with another control SW (for example Fusion or similar) ? Can you provide information on this use ?

    Thank You

    Best Regards

    Stefano

  • Hi Stefano,

    Thanks for your feedback.

Regarding the #3 suggestion, actually I mean the way such as generating a pattern by an MCU IO and then force this pattern on the CTRL pin. Although it's more troublesome, it should be feasible.

    Regards

    Lei

  • Hi Stefano,

Sorry for a late and "bad" update:

I just received a new applied TPS61170 EVM which contained adaptor 2022. Unfortunately, the adaptor can't be connected to the EVM neither at my side now. I think it's caused by that the old software is not compatible with the new adaptor.

So my suggestions are still the same as before, for example, you may use a MCU IO to configure the specific pattern on the CTRL pin and program the TPS61170.

    Regards

    Lei

  • HI Lei, thank you for the update.

    best regards
