TPS54010 - Input Voltage Confusion

I am working on a power design using TI parts. The customer is having some issues with noise so I was going to move them to a fully synchronized switcher setup using the TPS54010. The question I have is that the data sheet for the part is a bit confusing on whether the part can accept 2.5Vin or only 3Vin. Is there someone within TI that could help fill me in on this part? The power designer seems to indicate it will work but the datasheet has me doubting.

  • There are two input voltage pins, one for the input voltage, and one for the supply voltage on the chip. The supply voltage pin will accept voltages as low as 2.2V up to 4V, and this is the pin that actually allows the chip to turn on and work: all the logic inside the chip works off of this. The input voltage pin requires a range from 3V to 4V, and this is the voltage that will be dropped down by the TPS54010 Buck converter in question.  

  • Actually you have that backwards.  The Vin supply of 3-4 V operates the internal logic.  It is intended to run nominally from a 3.3 V supply.  The PVIN voltage can be lower.  This is intended to reduce switching losses.  Of course if your input voltage is between 3 - 4 V, you can tie both VIN and PVIN together to operate from a single supply.
