Can the LM3102 be used at higher output voltage levels?

I'm looking at using the LM3100 for a 15V output buck converter.  The IC selection matrix lists the maximum output voltage at 7V max (and the WEBENCH design tool won't let you enter any output voltage above 7V).  However, the datasheet makes no mention of any output voltage limitation, and I can't see any reason it wouldn't work at higher output voltage levels based on the block diagram.  Can you confirm that the LM3100 will work for a 15V output voltage, or at least provide an explanation of why it won't work?

  • The LM3100 and LM3102 both have an issue where if you use them at output voltages higher than 6-7 Vout, the output voltage at light load currents (below DCM) will creep up.  The higher the output voltage the higher the percentage that the output voltage will go up at light load.

     

    This issue has been addressed in the LM3103 and the LMR24220, both of which can be used for high output voltage.

  • Thanks for the response.  The LMR24220 looks like it might work.  I'm concerned about the small package size though, the application is a very high temperature environment and thermal management is a big concern.

  • You are right at high ambient temperatures the uSMD package of the LMR24220 would not be as effective at dissipating the heat as the eTSSOP of the LM3103.  Can you give me any more details about your operating conditions such as load current, input voltage and operating temperature?

     

    We also have the LMZ14203H modules that have excellent thermal performance and work well in higher ambient temperature environments.
