LM5006 vs. LM5010A

The LM5006 and LM5010A look like very similar parts, with very similar application circuits (especially when using a diode for the LM5006 instead of a FET). 

I am currently using the LM5006, and do not need the higher, 1A current limit of the LM5010A, but it would be a nice-to-have. 

I do, however, need the highest efficiency that I can find.  The datasheet efficiency numbers look close, but it is hard to tell for sure.  Given the same applications (say, 5V, 500mA output, 20Vin), is it possible to definitely say which regulator is more efficient?

  • LM5006 can be more efficient because it can drive a sync fet to improve the efficiency. Refer to Figure 5 of the LM5006 datasheet.

  • I do know that the LM5006 synchronous FET option can improve efficiency, although I am using the diode option to take advantage of DCM at light loads.  Assuming that both parts are using the same diode, does one come in any more efficient that the other?

  • We do not have the test data for direct comparison, because the LM5006 was intended for sync fet app.   For your 20Vin, 0.5A 5Vout  application, it is believed that the two parts would be very close in efficiency if you do not use the sync fet feature.  LM5006 has slightly higher Rds(ON) and thus higher conduction losses. However, as the integrated FET is smaller, the LM5006 will have lower switching losses.  IMHO, the LM5006 is a better choice for your application.

  • Hello Dave,

    You could use Webench for your analysis. Without the entire BOM, it is a little difficult to estimate which part would be more efficient. Webench will let you customize your BOM so that both designs would have comparable BOMs and then you can compare the resulting efficiencies. I hope this is helpful.
