Question bq24163

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24163

Hello,
I am searching for a Li-ion charger and I found the bq24163. Do I understand right, that the SYS-Pin has always 3.1V-3.3V. So also with Vin connection and without? Or do I need a voltage stabilization behind SYS.
Thank you in advance.
Bernhard

  • Hi,

You can look at bq2425x with power path option. The system will be kept at 3.5V for deeply discharged battery and will follow VBAT if the input is not connected.

    Thanks

  • Thank you for your answer.
The bq2425x looks OK. But you wrote: "will follow VBAT if the input is not connected.  ". Does it means, that there is not constant 3,5V all the time
on Vsys? For example: if the akku is charged, the voltage is e.g. 4,1V and then the Vin is disconnected. Is Vsys then 4.1V or 3.5V?

    Thank you again!

  • Hi Bernhard,

Please see the charge profile figure in the Data sheet; the figure will help you understand how the VBAT and VSYS behave during the charge cycle. Please note that if the battery is not present, the VSYS=3.5V. and if the battery is present and VBAT above 3.5V, the system voltage will follow VBAT as shown the charge cycle figure in the datasheet.

In your example, if akku is charged and the input is removed, system voltage will follow the battery voltage because all system power will be provided by the battery through the BAT FET.

I believe in your application, you will need to use back or boost converter.

    Thanks

    Tahar

  • Ok thanks alot. Now I see. But now I am at the beginning again .
There are so many chips... and my now-how... hmmm.

So please, would you like to help me?
I am searching for a solution for my application:
Well, in the middle I have a battery with about 5000 mAh. I have to charge it with 24V. My load needs 3,3V / 2-3A. Powerpath for charging and driving the load at the same time is what I need. The solution also must have a gas gauge.

I now there is a way to do it. But it 's hard for me to find...

    Thank you in advance, again!
