LMZ14203H Peak current support confirmation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMZ14203H

One of our customer is already using the LMZ14203H for a thermal printer application, the spec is

Vin min = 10.7V,

Vin max is 18V,

Vout = 9V

Iout = 2A, Peak is 5A

As the datasheet of this device mentions, that this device can support 5.4A peak current, could you please confirm whether this device can work for this specification/thermal printer application.

  • Hello Velmurugan,

    Here are some thoughts:

    There is an issue with the specifics of the application that isn’t really discussed in the data sheet. Looking at the VinMin of 10.7V and Vout of 9V places the design very close to drop out conditions. But beyond that is the issue that even though the average current is 2A, the peak current is near 5A. What is not illuminated in the data sheet is the fact that the top and bottom MOSFETs in the module are of different size (This can be deduced from the RDSon specs). The bottom MOSFET being the largest. The original die used in the family was created for high Vin to low Vout, and the MOSFET sizes were ratioed with that in mind. But this application is the opposite, having high duty cycle where the top MOSFET should be larger than the bottom.
