Hi,

We have completed our design using bq34z100-G1 ,now we are into its production.There are some doubts regarding testing of bq34z100.

After programming golden file on the device parameters such as voltage,current&temperature can be checked but how to check LED's which indicate SOC of battery.In bq2050h there was option to program the battery capacity from NACH&NACL registers and check if the correct led's were glowing or not.

Similarly is it possible to program different state of charge in bq34z100-g1 and check if correct led's are glowing or not and if alert function operates properly at required state of charge and further actions work properly.

If so how can it be done & if not what is alternate method to check the complete functionality.

You cannot override the RM in the bq34z100 to force an SOC. You can increase the voltage and issue a reset command and the gauge will run an FCC simulation and set a new SOC. If you just need to test whether the LEDs will light, then you can write 30 to the Control register and the gauge will turn all of the LEDs on. Issue a 31 to turn them off.

Just to confirm from you impedance tracking should be enabled only after board is connected to battery and that will be the final step and not before during testing.During testing we have to only program golden file and do the required testing .Am i right?

That is correct. IT should remain disabled until after you have calibrated the pack and connected the cells. You can seal the pack as the last step.

I have a doubt in this regard,
Can we observe change in SOC values only after enabling IT or simply after calibration we can see change in SOC?

Hi Tom,

What will happen if IT is enabled as last step in testing itself and then connected to battery?
Will that result in error and if yes how much will be the error?
Due to some issues we would not be able to enable IT after it is connected to battery so we have to enable IT before connecting to battery.
But we can perform complete charge discharge cycle after battery is connected , so if any error has occurred can it be corrected during cycling of pack?

The bq34z100-G1 does not have protection features, so faults will not be generated. It could cause your lifetime data to be updated with an inaccurate value.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your quick reply.
I am ok with lifetime data being inaccurate.But will the working of bq34z100 be accurate ,I understand it may be a little inaccurate in beginning but with number of charge discharge cycles will it become more accurate?

If you enable IT before you attach the cells, then the only side effect should be is that a DOD point will not get set when the cells get connected. It will get set, if the pack is allowed to rest, which may take a few hours. It should work normally after that.

We can see change in SOC after reset no need for IT to be enabled.

Yes we too tried with it and could see the SOC values updating.
