LMZ10504 Input Caps

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMZ10504

LMZ10504 data sheet recommends a ceramic input cap, 22 uF or 47 uF.  The applicaiton requires the use of Mil-spec capacitors and this much capacitance in ceramic is very large.

Is a Tantalum capacitor acceptable as the only input cap? Or maybe combined with a small ceramic cap (< 8.2uF)

  • Tantalum capacitors can be acceptable as input capacitors. But please make sure that the one you have chosen has relatively lower ESR across temperature. You would still need a smaller value ceramic such as 1 to 4.7uF at the input terminals, soldered right across the input pin and PGND pad without any thermal reliefs. The ceramic input cap is a must and helps filter out high frequency noise.
