TPS68470: Core power buck FB trace

Part Number: TPS68470

Hi,

Customer made a mistake to connect Core power FB trace to inductor instead of ourput cap.  May I know what could be the side effect with our chip for such connection?  If layout can't be modified, what else can be done to somehow cover this?

Thanks!

Antony

  • Hi Antony,

The effect will be related to the parasitic impedance between the point where the feedback connects to the power plane and the output capacitor. If it is a lot of impedance, there may be switch node ringing on the feedback which could cause instability issues or high ripple. If the output capacitor is moderately close (within approx 0.5 inch for example), then it could function just fine. It will also be slightly more susceptible to picking up stray high frequency noise since the output capacitor won't damp as effectively, but this is less likely to be a concern.

Recommendation would be to move the feedback point or move the output capacitor closer to the inductor if they are seeing issues.
