Battery charger solution

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24203, BQ24725A, BQ25871

Hello all,

I want to design a battery charging circuit for solar application, i am looking for a Li-ion battery charger IC which has an external current limit but follows the battery charge profile with a capability of 7A input current and minimum input voltage of 2.5V - 3.0V. something which is similar to BQ24203. Which ICs would you suggest me, as i searched a lot but didnt get a suitable IC for my application.

Thank you.

  • hey bhavesh,

We may not have a single IC that can meet all of your requirements. However, a combination of solutions will be most appropriate for what you are trying to do.

I would consider using the bq24725A, which is a Li-ion battery charge controller. This will allow you to select components to meet your 7A input current need. It does not have an external settable input current limit, but rather an externally settable charge current pin. The last thing to consider for this is that the input voltage has to be above a certain threshold (~4.5V).

Another option is using the bq2589x family of parts (25890/2/5/6) which has a programmable input current limit up to 3.25A. These parts also need the input voltage to be above a certain threshold close to ~4.5V to operate the buck converter correctly.

In these scenarios, to meet your requirements, you will most likely need some boost/buck-boost converter to supply the appropriate operating voltage of the charger IC.

Other than that, you can also look at the bq25871 which is meant for adjustable input adapters, so this part requires much more host control to ensure proper charging.

    Hope this helps!
