LP2980-ADJ: Minimum output current

Part Number: LP2980-ADJ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP2981

Hello Colleagues,

The customer I support is asking, if it`s possible to use the LP2981 in light low (1mA and lower). My understanding is, that LDOs working fine without any load but the datasheet Design Requirements 8.2.1 says, that 1mA is the minimum. Can you explain me this?

Best regards,

Florian

  • Hi Florian,

Usually minimum load requirement is something related to stability of the LDO due to certain design techniques. For LP2980, I can see that it includes stability charts with 0mA load. As long as ESR requirement being met, the device should have no stability issue at 0mA load.

The datasheet also indicates the output voltage is slightly higher at 0mA.

You may also advise that device has been tested at 0mA for certain tests only even though the device has no stability issue as long as ESR requirement has been met.

    Regards,
