LM5161: Output Power

Part Number: LM5161

Hi,

I would like to make a 30W 85VDC to 36VDC converter.

This device can deliver 1A at 12V output on the LM5161PWPBKEVM evaluation board. This is 12W

If i set the output voltage to 36V and change the output capacitors to 50V types, is it then able to deliver 30W or even 36W of output power?  Or is it not that simple?

Kind Regards

  • Hello Peter,

You will need to take case of the thermal dissipation of the device.  I ran a WeBench design and it reports ~1.5W of losses in the device.  So my advice is as follows.

    1.  Make a large Gnd pad (much greater than 1"^2) with thermal Vis for good heat conduction to both outer layers of the board.

    2. Supply External VCC to minimize the losses in the device.

    3.  Switch at around 100kHz to minimize transitional losses.

    Hope this helps?

    David.

  • Hello David,

Yes this will help. Thank you, i will follow your advice.

    Kind Regards,

    Peter
