BQ51013B: Design review request for BQ51013 + BQ24076 + BQ27421

Part Number: BQ51013B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24076, BQ51052B, , BQ51013

Hello,

Can someone from TI applications please take a look at the attached schematic? It's devoid of any proprietary information. It's a wireless charging + fuel gauge IC solution. I haven't used the TI qi stuff before, and battery chargers are always more difficult than I expect.

Battery is a Samsung Galaxy Note4 battery:

  • Nominal voltage 3.85V
  • Capacity: 3.22mAh (12.4Wh)
  • Charge: CC/CV, Charve voltage = 4.4V; Charging current=644mA max.
  • End of charge current=32.2mA;
  • Charging Temp=45C max.

I looked at using the BQ51052B (Integrated Qi receiver and battery charger) but this is only in a fine pitch BGA, and would require tighter layout than the rest of the board. So, I changed it to a BQ51013B qi receiver which then feeds a BQ24076 charger. Finally, there's a BQ27421 fuel cell IC for battery monitoring.

Thanks,

  • Hello
I have reviewed the bq51013B and bq24076 did not see any problems.
Is this a design that will be WPC certified?
    Some notes on the bq51013B:
1.) Good coil and size planned will reduce design problems. Based on the EVM Vishay WAS-4832FF-50, 48mm X 32mm with low DCR.
2.) Coil tuning may need to be tweaked C16, C11 and C9 value change. Values are good as a starting point. The coil L will change with metal around it and mounting. Coil L and capacitors are tuned to 100kHz.
3.) C17 and C18 are needed for WPC certification and would need to be re-tuned also. Current values good as a starting point.
4.) AD pin 2 grounded, good. This is the external adapter mosfet detect pin, when not used pin needs to be grounded and pin 8 float.
5.) Clamp, Comm and Boot values look good
6.) ILIM and FOD resistor values look good as starting values, R28, R32 and R26. If FOD certification may require the values to be tweaked.
7.) TS/CTRL pin 13 connected to ground with 10k resistor, safe condition disabling TS function.
8.) EN1 and EN2 pulled low, enable wireless power, good.
9.) RECT filter capacitors 2 X 10uF, good. This is a high noise unregulated and more filtering is better.
10.) OUT has min of 1uF and is OK.
    Some notes on the bq24076:
1.) SYSOFF and /CE low, normal operating with battery charging enable
2.) TMR 56k, double checked calculation and it is about 7.5hr
3.) EN1 low and EN2 high, Input current limit set by ILIM resistor
4.) TS 10k, safe condition disable TS fault
5.) ILIM 1.5k, double checked calculation and it is about 1A input current
6.) ISET 1.8k, double checked calculation and it is about 500mA charge current
7.) OUT and BATT filter caps look good

  • Hello,

Thanks for taking a look at this. It's for a proprietary application - I'm designing both the transmitter and the receiver. I wanted to go with TI for the transmitter, but all the TI WPC transmitter ICs are NRND. So I had to use NXP. The transmitter IC is WPC 1.2 - I assume that won't be a problem with this WPC 1.1 receiver BQ51013?

    a) Does TI have any WPC 1.2 5W receivers that are not BGA? I looked but didn't see anything.

    2) What is the procedure for tuning the LC tank: Cseries C9,C11,C16 and Cparallel C17 & C18?

    9) I changed RECT filter capacitors to be 2x22 uF. Should I go bigger? I also increased BQ51013B output / BQ24076 input capacitor (C3) to 22uF.

    Thanks,

    Derek

I assume that won't be a problem with this WPC 1.1 receiver BQ51013? ---Bill J - For 5W WPC1.1 and 1.2 are the same. BQ51013B RX will work in 1.2 applications and can be certified to 1.2.

    a) Does TI have any WPC 1.2 5W receivers that are not BGA? I looked but didn't see anything.----Bill J -- The WPC 1.1 RX will meet WPC 1.2 requirements and can be certified to 1.2.

    2) What is the procedure for tuning the LC tank: Cseries C9,C11,C16 and Cparallel C17 & C18?---Bill J -- See section 9.2.1.2.2 of the data sheet. LCR bridge is used to measure the coil L when place on TX coil or coil simulator.

    9) I changed RECT filter capacitors to be 2x22 uF. Should I go bigger? I also increased BQ51013B output / BQ24076 input capacitor (C3) to 22uF.---Bill J -- this is OK,
