LP5912-Q1: LP5912-Q1

The  LP5912-Q1 Automotive 500-mA LDO  look interesting , however there were some thermal issues in the datasheet that we would like to clarify:

It is mentioned that this LDO can operate in +125 degC ambient temperature(mentioned on the first page and there are some characteristic curves for working in +125 degC ambient) and on the same time the maximal recommended junction temperature is +125 degC.

We would like to ask:

1) Can this LDO work in +125 degC ambient temperature (for long term)? What are the limitations and the deratings (output current and etc.)?

2) Is working for long term in +125 degC ambient temperature will damage the component? If so, how?

  • Hi Eli,

The front page ambient temperature range is due to the AEC Q100 specification. Per AEC Q100 LP5912-Q1 is a Grade 1 device. Unfortunately things get more confusing due to LDOs being power dissipative devices because power dissipative devices are specified at junction temperature instead of ambient.

LP5912-Q1 is designed, tested, and characterized for a maximum junction temperature of 125 C. As such, the Electrical Characteristic table specifications are for a maximum junction temperature of 125 C. The LDO does still function at higher junction temperatures but the performance may not meet the specifications in the Electrical Characteristic table as the LDO would be operating outside the test conditions.

Junction temperature is dependent on power dissipated and ambient temperature. We recommend that the junction temperature of LP5912-Q1 be limited to 125 C; therefore, at an ambient temperature of 125 C the power dissipation would need to be 0 in order to remain with in the recommended region and have the performance specified in the Electrical Characteristics table.

Since your ambient temperature is 125 C, you will want to consider an LDO with an operating junction temperature maximum above 125 C such as TPS7A88-Q1.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
