Can the SS pin be floated?

It is best to use a Css on this pin, even if you do not need an extened soft-start time.
I would use a 100nF cap. This will provide a minimul amount of soft-start time
to help reduce inrush current.
I think that the risk is large inrush currents on the input.
The soft-start time is likely to be fast with no SS cap.
This can create large inrush currents on your input supply.
