BQ24232H: 4.20V(full charge) battery is connected by mistake

Part Number: BQ24232H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24232, BQ24230

Hi Team,

My customer considers to use bq24232H for 4.35V(full charge) battery.
He is studying what is occured if 4.20V(full charge) battery is connected to bq24232H by mistake.

I heard the 4.20V(full charge) battery has OVP protection and switches off when battery voltage increases more than 4.28V.
Is there any concern in this situation?

  • Hello Yaita,
I'll suggest using the BQ24232 as its battery regulation voltage is 4.2V. If the BQ24232H is used and the battery OVP protection trips, the battery will not be charged since the FETs on the protection IC will be turned off. The BQ24232H will go through its battery detection routine which sinks about 7.5mA for battery detection.
  • Hi Raheem-san,

    Thank you for your support.
I would like to ask one more question.

I heard 4.20V(full charge) battery reduces charging current itself around VBAT=4.2V.
Is it possible case BQ24232H detects charge termination at VBAT=4.2V although regulation voltage of BQ24232H is 4.35V?
The following flow diagram doesn't shows condition of VBAT voltage for charge termination so I would like to ask it.

  • Hello,
Termination occurs at the VBAT(REG) voltage which is 4.35 for the BQ24232H. You should use the BQ24232 if you want the battery to terminate at 4.2V
  • Hi Raheem-san,

Thank you for your kind support. I understand.

I would like to ask about Figure 26.
VBAT pin shows square wave after battery removed.
How much voltage (Vp-p) BQ24232H outputs in this case?

I would also like to know if the voltage (Vp-p) is different between BQ24232H(4.35V) and BQ24230(4.2V).

    Best Regards,

  • Yaita-san,
Vpp will be VBAT(REG) for each device. 4.35V for BQ24232H and 4.2V for BQ24230.
