TPS63027: Quiescent Current in PWM Mode

Part Number: TPS63027

Hi

Currently my client is developing with TPS63027.

The customer expected an Iq of 35uA on the datasheet

However, Quiescent Current is about 7mA.

I have reviewed the circuit diagram and have not used PFM mode by connecting Mode Pin to Gnd.

The corresponding 35uA seems to be the standard in PFM mode.

The customer wants to know the Iq value in PWM mode.

Do you think that the measured 7mA is appropriate now?

If I change to PFM Mode, can I expect an Iq of 35uA?

  • Hello Andy,

Based on your measurements values, I will assume that you refer to the no-load input current, which is not the same as the quiescent current Iq from the datasheet. For clarification, please see app note SLYT412. As for the no-load input current, for PFM mode it is somewhat higher but close to the Iq from the datasheet, and depends on voltage, temperature and the circuit. The value that you measured for no-load input current for PWM mode is realistic and expected.

    Best regards,
    Milos

  • Hello

Thank you for your quick reply.

The customer wants to compare the IQ value of PFM Mode and PWM Mode by actually measuring the circuit using TPS63027.
Could you actually deliver the measured data?
  • Hello Andy,

The quiescent current Iq is always the same, please refer to the datasheet, page 5.

If you want to know the no-load input current, it is best to measure it directly like you did, because it depends on the circuit. For TPS63027 EVM board for example, the no-load input current is around 40 µA in PFM mode, and around 8 mA in forced PWM mode.

Are you refering to the no-load input current or quiescent current? Can you show the schematic and show in which current you are interested in?

    Best regards,
    Milos
