BQ40Z50-R2: Stand Alone mode

Genius 12865 points
Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50-R1, BQSTUDIO, BQ40Z50, BQ2947

Hello team,

I understand that I can use BQ40Z50-R1/R2 in stand alone mode after configuration by bqStudio, correct?
Some questions:

1) after programming the golden image all decisions are done in BQ40Z50 and SMBus is just needed if for monitoring, correct?

2) the BQ40Z50 is powered by the battery pack and always needs to be connected to it, correct?

3) In case the cell voltage reaches an overvolt condition it will be disconnected from the pack by e.g. BQ2947. In that case BQ40Z50 will be completely without power. Will all settings remain or ist it required to re-program it by bqStudio?

All these points end up in the main question if a small µC is required or not.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Hans

  • Hi Hans,
    1. After programming the BQ40z50, it can operate completely standalone and make all gauging and protection decisions. The SMBus can be used for monitoring if needed, and also for diagnostics if there are any issues.
    2. The BQ40z50 is primarily powered by the cells, but in case of a failure of the cells, it is possible to power it from the PACK+/PACK- for diagnostics.
    3. In case the secondary protector BQ2947 trips and blows the fuse, the cells will be disconnected from PACK+, but the gauge will still have power, so there will be no issues with the gauge. Also, all settings are stored in Flash, so even if all power is removed from the device, it will not lose settings and diagnostics data like Lifetime and Black Box data.
