TPS53679: tun off the phase on TPS53679/8 by software

Part Number: TPS53679

Hi,

Customer wants to confirm if TPS53679/8 can shut down  the phase by software or must by the hardware configuration.

Can you give a comment since we can't find the relative item in the GUI?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Oliver,

Does the customer want to add/drop phases as the load current changes or just permanently shutdown a phase without doing hardware changes?

For the first option make sure Enable Dynamic Phase Shedding (under the Static Tab) is selected and written to the controller.

For option two, you can write to MFR_SPECIFIC_20 to permanently disable a phase.

If they're looking to maximize efficiency, letting the controller dictate the number of phases itself is the best option. Manual add/drop will also affect the transient response too as PMBus commands to add a phase during a load step will be much slower than the transient itself. The customer will see worse undershoot and potentially worse overshoot too depending on how long the transient lasts. Commands to MFR_SPECIFIC_20 are best left for experiments and proof of concept validation rather than dynamic use during operation. If the phase count has to drop, tying that CSP line to 3.3V is the best option.

    Cheers,

    Carmen
